Some News for Tue Sep 21, 2010

STARTERS

Thierry Henry will NOT play on Friday night when New York goes to LA due to a sprained knee he has been nursing, and now needs to rest.

STORY OF THE DAY

Geoffrey Arnold of the Oregonian does a Q & A with MLS commissioner Donald L Garber on the progress in Portland, and the rumors surrounding changes in the near future for the league.
-I HATE the idea of an unbalanced schedule.

Garber was in Portland today as a guest at the Sports Executive Speaker Series, and for the official ground breaking ceremony for re-construction at PGE Park.
-Although this picture suggests some sort of sandbox or litterbox type event. Or perhaps they are hunting for gopher?

The team has also launched the Rose City Roots blog. And a PGE Park construction webcam!

CONCACAF CHAMPIONS LEAGUE GROUP STAGE

The action rolls on with Round 4!

AMERICANS IN EUROPE

Brian Sciaretta of Yanks Abroad tells of the mess that U20 prodigy Gale Agbossoumonde finds himself in.

With Tim Howard on the bench, Everton were knocked out of the League Cup in a Penalty Kick Shoot Out.

Marcus Hahnemann watched from the bench as Wolverhapton advanced in the same tournament.

WTF. How can it be a ground breaking when they're only digging on some dirt that was shipped in? They didn't break the ground! Garber just cursed PGE Park!

Hi Bruce,

As always, you are performing a great service to humanity. Thank you for all the hard work you put into du Nord.

Though a little old, the following article might be of interest to your readers--Carl Robinson's latest column for the County Times where he pays tribute to his recently deceased father and Welsh football legend, Phil "Robbo" Robinson.

It's pretty hard to ceremonially break ground into concrete (which is what is under the artificial turf at PGE Park). So it was either not ceremonially break ground or bring in the sand boxes. And the ceremony (clearly) earns a bit of media coverage... never mind that construction has been under way for some time... so the only choice is to bring in the sand boxes.

It is a little funny to compare this groundbreaking with months of construction work already completed to the groundbreaking that Real Salt Lake did when they were months form locking down the deal to even build the stadium.
